Ode to My Mother

Who was my mother before she was my mother? A little poem from the archives to celebrate Mother’s Day. I love you, Mama!

Within Her Hands

Within her hands, now rough and worn,

A little girl once held the morn,

Once swept the stars and shook the tree,

And played with possibility.

Then clutching fists could only pray

When hopeful dreamings slipped away,

And learn to beat and dig and tear,

To toughen skin and smother care.

And yet, within her hands I find

The strength to live and stretch my mind;

The world she formed with blood and pain

Has housed a little girl again—

Misshapen, yes, and less than planned,

But never lost within her hand.

Although crippled by disease, I'm fully alive in love. I write about the terrible beauty and sacred wonder of life, while living with physical disability and severe dependency. A revert to the Catholic faith through atheism, I'm not afraid to ask life's big questions. I explore what it means to be fully human through my weekly blog and have written a book: It's Good to Be Here, published by Sophia Institute Press.

  4. I Thought I would share this reflection from Devine mercy. I received the email this morning & It makes me think of you –
Your devotion to the sacred heart of Jesus and how you embrace Whole heartedly the holy Trinity which has given you inner peace to accept all the challenges/ sufferings you live daily.
I am still seeking to find this relationship with our Lord to have that inner peace.
Your book and your weekly writings/poems are encouraging and helping me to Trust our Lord. I honestly need to let go of my “control everything”personality and give it to God so He can give me the inner peace to embrace the challenges He has given me. Thank you Christina, you inspire me to be the person God wants me to be!
Bellow is the Divine Mercy Reflection:
How deep is your relationship with Jesus, the Father and the Holy Spirit? Is it something more intellectual? Is it based only on the fact that you believe in them, for the most part? Or is it something that goes much deeper? The goal must be to come to know God in a real and tangible way. But that knowledge of Him must also be personal. It must become a relationship that is lived and that sustains you in all things. If the Blessed Trinity lives within you, and if you allow yourself to embrace that relationship wholeheartedly, then you will discover an inner sweetness that overwhelms any suffering or hardship you endure. The sweetness of that love will carry you, day in and day out, to the glories of Heaven.

Lord, I long to know You, to love You and to become one with You. I desire to have You live within my soul, refreshing me with the sweetness of Your presence. Take my life, sweet Jesus, and unite me with Your perfect Heart of love. Jesus, I trust in You.

    • Theresa,

I was just thinking the other day about how essential a personal relationship with God is to a true life of faith! Imagine, then, my appreciation for the reflection that you shared. It’s beautiful! I will strive to keep it in mind whenever I lose sight of what matters most — something that happens to all of us sometimes.

Your words about my writing are a strong encouragement to me in my ministry! We all need encouragement. Thank you. Whenever I suffer doubts about my work, I pray that your words and the testimony of others will come to my mind so that I may remember what wonders God accomplishes. May the Holy Spirit strengthen and guide us all.

“Take my life, sweet Jesus, and unite me with Your perfect Heart of love. Jesus, I trust in You.” Amen.
      Peace and blessings,
      Pax Christi
