Unplanned Beauty

Queen Anne's Lace up close with a little bee

When it comes to planned beauty and unplanned beauty, unplanned beauty is always the most beautiful.

My parents neglected to clear the grass that grows behind their fence this year. Grass and weeds grew up to surmount the top rail and were seen clearly through the thin black spindles. It did look like a bit of a mess, but then, as spring grew into summer, we began to have an inkling of what most of those “weeds” were: Queen Anne’s Lace. We had faith that the scraggly green stalks, still a bit ugly, would come to flower into lovely little galaxies of delicate blooms.

And so it happened. (Click the play arrow)

In life, how many times have I been disappointed only to find that my disappointments have led to a delightful surprise? When joy or beauty comes unexpectedly, our sense of wonder is full of the sacred.

PS. More thoughts on beauty coming up in September (God willing).

Although crippled by disease, I'm fully alive in love. I write about the terrible beauty and sacred wonder of life, while living with physical disability and severe dependency. A revert to the Catholic faith through atheism, I'm not afraid to ask life's big questions. I explore what it means to be fully human through my weekly blog and have written a book: It's Good to Be Here, published by Sophia Institute Press.
