Celebrating the Gift of You

Today, one of my friends is celebrating a birthday. This young man (young enough to be my son, and yes that makes me feel old) lives with cerebral palsy and bipolar disorder. Recently, he has been gathering funds for an organization that has been giving him much-needed assistance, planning to present the donation today, for his birthday. Isn’t that a wonderful thing, to give a gift to others when celebrating the day that you were born?
Because this young man, with the great name of Christian, lives on an island country far away, I made an unscripted video for him celebrating, not only the day of his birth, but also the fact of his life — his very existence. This video goes along with two other “Dear Christian” video epistles that I’ve made, and I’m now sharing it with you, dear reader, because you are also a wonderful gift of God worthy of celebration — on not just your birthday, but every day as well.

Although crippled by disease, I am fully alive in love. I write about the profound wonder and terrible beauty of life while living with physical disability and severe dependency. Unafraid to ask life's big questions, I was briefly an atheist and considered other religions before finding, in God's choice to intimately share our humanity, what it truly means to be fully human. A revert to the Catholic Faith, I blog weekly and have written a book called It's Good to Be Here.
Well Hello! Nice to see you. You look so well, and so good. I’m struck by your sudden presence on my screen. (I’ll attend the birthday party later.) Just wanted to say a surprised and happy “Hi.”
