Who You Are

foggy image, blurred, obfuscated

What words cannot tell

nor images show…

No fragrance,

no strain of music,

no touch can hold on

to what I know…

You, my Lord

With that little word “my”

what am I trying to say?

Can I possess You,

claim You and make You my own?

No. Because you have given Yourself

to me before I could take any action,

before I could see

or hear or touch or taste or smell,

You made Yourself mine in blood.

I can’t change that.

Shall I try to run away from my own feet?

Only the darkness of my mind can obscure the truth

or the weakness of my heart reject,

but You go  n o w h e r e —

You Keep being

What words cannot tell

nor images show,

no fragrance, strain of music,

or touch can hold on

to what I know

And yet I write.

Why must I write?

Although crippled by disease, I'm fully alive in love. I write about the terrible beauty and sacred wonder of life, while living with physical disability and severe dependency. A revert to the Catholic faith through atheism, I'm not afraid to ask life's big questions. I explore what it means to be fully human through my weekly blog and have written a book: It's Good to Be Here, published by Sophia Institute Press.

    • And probably like any vocation, there is a feeling of inadequacy, a sense that we cannot do full justice to the goodness of life with our mere works. The Holy Spirit is always needed. (Come, Holy Spirit, come)

  1. If you would not write He would be even more unknown and unthought of and unappreciated. Your poetic stabs do touch upon Him and we are thankful to receive what we can from the “melody” of your words.

    • Thank you very much for your words of encouragement!
God speaks to us in a language that we can understand… and allows us to share what we have heard, though we speak in murmurs and whispers, and sometimes, most clearly and powerfully, through our actions.
