Learn Mercy

Rosary on top of the Bible

The meaning of life can be understood very simply.

The Lord’s Prayer

In the month of October, we Catholics are encouraged to pray the rosary — whether it be for the first time in a long time or with more focused attention in a daily devotion. (For more about the rosary, click HERE.) Central in the prayers of the rosary is the “Our Father,” which is prayed just after the Apostles Creed and at the beginning of each decade. This is the prayer that Jesus gave to us Himself, so it’s definitely worth reflecting upon, as I have been doing here lately and will continue to do.

The beginning of the Lord’s Prayer is full of praises for God and the goodness of God’s will. Then we meditate upon all that God does, praying that God will continue to “give us … forgive us … lead us … and deliver us.” There is only one line, as far as I can see, that has to do with our actions. In other words, there is only one thing for us to meditate upon as God’s requirement for us, only one thing that God desires from us: mercy. We remember, and even ask God to help us remember to have mercy, as in “… as we forgive those who have trespassed against us.”

Why We’re Here

Reflecting upon the essential importance of mercy, I made a very quick little video (30 seconds) about why it’s important. If you’ve already watched it on my social media accounts, there’s really no harm in watching it again!

Although crippled by disease, I'm fully alive in love. I write about the terrible beauty and sacred wonder of life, while living with physical disability and severe dependency. A revert to the Catholic faith through atheism, I'm not afraid to ask life's big questions. I explore what it means to be fully human through my weekly blog and have written a book: It's Good to Be Here, published by Sophia Institute Press.
